Liz Phair Announces Fall Tour, Celebrates 25th Anniversary Of Landmark Album

Posted on by

Liz Phair’s groundbreaking 1993 album Exile in Guyville celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and this is no understated occasion. The album that is attributed with singlehandedly progressing women’s place in rock music forever, the album has inspired an entire generation of artists to move forward and make their voices be heard in an industry so disporportionately affected by the patriarchal society under which it exists.

Phair has already been doing a lot to promote the 25th anniversary: on top of the re-release of the album she did with Matador in early May, she has been doing another round of press regarding the album, including a song-by-song breakdown that can be found over at Rolling Stone.

For fans of the music, more Exile in Guyville-related news is incredible and well-deserved after the legacy of the album has affected so many in such positive ways.

Tenacious D Announces New Tour

Posted on by

Fans of the comedy-rock duo Tenacious D are excited over reports that the group is planning their first tour in five years for the coming fall. The group, which features Jack Black as lead singer and Kyle Gass as lead guitar, will begin an 8-concert tour at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on November 3. The tour’s final show will be in Chicago at the Riviera Theatre on November 13. Tickets for the duo’s tour go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on May 18, but a special pre-sale began on May 16. In addition to their fall tour, Tenacious D will also be performing at Montebello Rockfest in Quebec June 14 through 16 and at Cal Jam 18 on October 6 with Foo Fighters, Iggy Pop, and several other rock bands.

The duo announced their fall tour through a YouTube video. In the humorous animated clip, Gass and Black joked that they needed to start the tour so that they could pay their rent. The clip also referenced fans’ frustration over the time it has taken to get their next album out. A follow-up to 2012’s Rize of the Fenix, Black recently confirmed that the group’s next album would be called Post-Apocalypto and would be a rock opera set in an apocalyptic wasteland.

Tenacious D first formed in 1994 in Los Angeles. In their nearly 25-year career, the group has released three albums and been nominated for several awards, winning a Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Metal Performance. In addition to roles in numerous animated shorts and television programs, Tenacious D starred in their own movie, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, in 2006.

New Prince Album To Be Released In 2019

Posted on by

Despite being in the midst of a legal battle with the Prince Estate, music streaming service Tidal has just announced some great news: come 2019 they will be releasing a brand-new album of Prince’s music, compiled from previously unreleased recordings.

After having a long career of 39 studio albums under his belt before passing away in April 2016, it’s hard to believe that Prince had much more up his sleeve. However, the acclaimed and just-as-secret “Prince Vault” has shown time and again that there is plenty of music to be released, making this announcement all the more enticing.

Like many streaming-exclusive albums it will be available exclusively on Tidal for the first 2 weeks before becoming available to the general public for download. The Prince Estate will then handle the physical release of said album, which currently has no name. This surprising decision comes after Prince’s estate revising the artist’s decision to remove his entire catalogue from streaming services in November 2015 in favor of signing exclusively with Tidal, a decision that has been continuously questioned since the artist’s passing.

Tidal has previously released albums of Prince’s exclusively, such as the 2015 records HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two and the team is using this partnership as the basis for their continued collaboration with Prince’s music and his estate. Tidal founder Jay-Z said that “we will continue to respect and honor Prince’s enduring legacy and wishes with this new collection,” and there’s no reason to believe he won’t. Prince’s estate is notoriously stingy with his music and rights, so this agreement not only to continue working with Tidal during this lawsuit but also release new Prince music is huge.

James Brown Drummer Jab’O Starks Dies at Age 79

Drummer John Starks, better known as Jab’O, passed away on May 1 of acute leukemia, which had developed as a complication of myelodysplastic syndrome. He had been in hospice care for about a week, and he died in his home in Mobile, Alabama, the same city in which he was born. Best known as a drummer for James Brown’s band from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, Starks played on some of the singer’s most iconic recordings.

Starks was the fifth drummer to play for Brown. The singer’s sixth drummer, Clyde Stubblefield, joined the band just months after Starks, and the two percussionists found a wonderful working rhythm together. They remained lifelong friends and often spent time together in the ensuing decades until Stubblefield’s death in 2017. Although his diagnosis in 2017 slowed him down, Starks continued to perform, appearing onstage most recently in March of 2018.

Starks discovered his love of music and of percussive rhythms through the church, which he attended regularly as a child. As he grew older, he teamed up with various mentors in the thriving music scene in Alabama, among them Cornelius Coleman and Clayton Fillyau. By the time he joined Brown, he had a great deal of experience, having worked with some of the best drummers in the business. He also saw the face of music transform during his decades of performing and recording.

While he continued to perfect his craft throughout his life, he remains best known for his tenure with Brown. The songs for which he is most famous include number 1 hits “The Payback” and “Get on the Good Foot.” His legacy will live on in these and many other songs that bear his percussive influence.

Multi-talented musician, actor, producer, and writer Donald Glover, a.k.a “Childish Gambino” has scored his first No. 1 hit with his latest single, “This is America”. The track, in its debut, overtook Drake’s “Nice For What” for the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Childish Gambino has previously scored a No. 5 placement in the Billboard charts for his album “Awaken, My Love”, along with nominations for Album and Record of the Year.

He first performed the smash record as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, for which he also hosted. During the live show, Gambino dropped what would become the biggest video of the year and the talk of the entire country with his accompanying music video.

The “This is America” music video features Childish Gambino performing just about every dance move from hip hop culture, in the foreground of a chaotic scene in a warehouse. The chaos involved gun violence, people chasing after one another, and dancing on the tops of cars. At first glance, it is another entertaining video filled with dancing and commotion, but in depth analysis of the video as revealed an abundance of social commentary and metaphors.

You can watch the sensational video from Childish Gambino, here.

Gambino’s dancing has been interpreted to be a commentary on the role of black entertainers in American society, serving as a distraction from the harsh realities of life as an African American. With people all over the world tuning into the video for its message or for its catchy beat, it accumulated over 85.3 million views within a week of its release. As of May 16th, the video is nearing 130 million views and counting. Glover will go on a “This is America” tour, and act in the upcoming “Solo” Star Wars film.

Mitski Announces New Album, Releases Music Video

Posted on by

Since Mitski’s breakout 2014 album Bury Me at Makeout Creek, she has gained intense notoriety, traveled around the world, and released plenty more music. However, this doesn’t mean that new Mitski music isn’t welcome—quite the opposite, actually. The more music she releases, the more detailed and intricate her music becomes, and there’s always room for more!

After the success of her last album, Puberty 2, Mitski will be releasing Be the Cowboy, an album of narrative-driven songs following a character she has created to combat the notion that women don’t have control in society.

The music video premiering with the announcement, a dark, brooding song called “Geyser”, features the turmoil that Mitski hints at with the new character. Seemingly stranded on a beach, the character fumbles around as the music becomes more intense, scrambling for a sense of direction. The grim clouds appear to direct her inward, and towards the end of the video she begins anxiously digging with her hands to get to the bottom of the sand before shoving her head in a small hole, giving up.

This distinct sense of inner turmoil is represented in a pounding rock texture, accented by the persistent rhythm of a hard rock drumkit. “I will be the one you need/I just can’t be without you,” Mitski sings as the song begins to get louder with added synthesizers and eventually come to a final, harsh downbeat.

None of these artistic decisions are out of the realm of Mitski, yet they feel incredibly new and a different direction for this constantly growing artists. We can’t wait to hear the new album!

Music Modernization Act Would Alter Music Payment System

Posted on by

The music industry is abuzz with talk of the Music Modernization Act, a piece of legislation that would dramatically alter the way musicians and songwriters are paid. Under the current system, the Copyright Act of 1909 is in force. That date precedes recorded music and, according to industry insiders, is inadequate in today’s climate of music streaming services.

Congress passed a law in the 1970s to extend copyright protections for recorded music but it did not cover recordings made before 1972. Classic recordings are seeing more airplay due to the advent of satellite radio and services such as Spotify and Pandora. The MMA hopes to ensure that classic artists get paid when their songs are played on such services.

The legislation Songwriters are currently paid according to a system called “willing buyer/willing seller,” that allows a service the rights to play songs, paying a rate determined by a judge. That will continue under the MMA (with some changes) but the mechanism for how songwriters will be paid will change. If Spotify wants to play a song, it holds the money due to the songwriter until the artist can be found. The MMA would have the services fund a Mechanical Licensing Collective in exchange for a blanket license. The MLC would be administered by music publishers and songwriters and not the streaming services.

The hope is that this will make the process easier for the streaming services while ensuring songwriters get paid for their work.

The legislation has gotten broad bipartisan support. It passed unanimously in the House in April and a Senate version is now being considered. The legislation got a warm reception by lawmakers in a committee hearing on Tuesday, May 15. There are still details to be worked out, but considering the favorable climate in the Senate, a bill could be passed by summer.
