Pearl Jam Debuts New Protest Song

Posted on by

It’s been more than five years since Pearl Jam released their “Lightning Bolt” LP. That was their last original music…until now. On bassist Jeff Ament’s 55th birthday, the band released “Can’t Deny Me” as a special treat.

It debuted first on Sirius XM’S Pearl Jam Radio as a gift for the members of the Ten Club — an exclusive group for Pearl Jam’s most loyal fans. For a yearly fee, members gain early access to new tracks, exclusive magazines, and special discounts.

With its staccato beat and scathing, politically charged lyrics, the new song isn’t subtle. It’s a familiar sound that should appeal to old fans as well as potential fans who are frustrated with the current political climate. The artwork for the song keeps to the protest theme, with scenes of a crowd marching and a woman holding a protest sign with the track’s name written on it.

It’s been a busy few years for Pearl Jam. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Eddie Vedder stopped by an episode of Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” revival to perform “Out of Sand,” a melancholy new solo track that looks back at the passage of time.

Mike McCready has been busy as well. Pearl Jam’s lead guitar player wrote the score for “Sadie,” a film about a young girl coping with her military father’s absence.

The band, one of the biggest in the world in the 1990s, is still going strong with live performances. Many of their South American tour dates are sold out. This summer, they head from South America to Europe before coming back to the States for a completely sold-out tour.

Belly Taps into Nostalgia with First Release Since 1995

Posted on by

Rhode Island alt-rock group Belly is back with just its third studio album. “Dove” will be the band’s first significant re;ease since 1995, adding to a nostalgia-driven surge of new records from 1990s alternative acts.

Belly’s new single, “Shiny One,” has already debuted ahead of a May 4th release of “Dove.”

Formed in 1991, the band’s centerpiece is Tanya Donnelly on lead vocals and guitar. She has also been part of Throwing Roses and the Breeders. Incidentally, the Breeders are back with a new album as well, sans Donnelly.

In addition to Donnelly, Belly was originally composed of bassist Fred Abong, Tom Gorman on guitar, and Fred’s brother Christ on drums. All were high school classmates. Abong left the group early on and was replaced by Gail Greenwood.

Belly had its original and biggest hit in its early days with “Feed the Tree,” which was featured on its 1993 album “Star.” That record earned them a big following in alt-rock, as well as several Grammy nominations.

For its next studio album in 1995, Belly adopted a harder rock sound on “King.” However, that release did not achieve the level of success of “Star,” and Donnelly decided to break up the band in 1996. She went on to have some success as a solo artist.

In early 2016, Belly announced that it had reunited after 20 years. They returned to the studio to work on “Dove,” and announced that they would begin touring the United States and parts of Europe.

“Shiny One” has a hazy, dreamy sound to it that is more reminiscent of the band’s work on “Star” as opposed to the louder rock of “King.” This presumably bodes well for the album’s popularity given the massive success of its first album.

Belly fans will be eager to devour the band’s long-awaited new music.

Spotify to Be Publicly Traded

Posted on by

Spotify, the streaming music giant, is preparing to go public. The company recently filed their initial public offering (IPO) for $1 billion to be a part of the action on the New York Stock Exchange. While investors will likely be rushing to obtain a part of this very popular stock, the actual company isn’t so popular with many artists and songwriters. They have quite the varied opinion of the Swedish company, valued at $19 billion. The company’s structure compensates artists with royalties where the more popular artists receive the greatest payments. Many older and less known artists don’t receive as much compensation and generally dislike this structure. However, those artists at the top have little to complain about as they can see massive payments. Spotify pays about $7 for every 1,000 songs that are streamed. This accounts for quite a payday for top artists. For example, Ed Sheeran accumulated 6.3 billion streams in 2017 for a nice payment of more than $44 million. On the other hand, David Crosby, a veteran rock artist, accumulated 2.2 million streams for his “Lighthouse” album in 2016, and he didn’t receive any compensation. Again, this is due to the unique structure.

Regardless of opinions, the company will likely continue to see a stream of income. Estimates indicate that Spotify could make about $23 billion due to the IPO. Record labels would see dividends as well with top labels such as Sony Entertainment, Warner, and Universal estimated to receive about $1 billion each. Record labels also use their company’s unique structure to determine payment which, again, usually goes more towards the popular artist. These industry-leading labels have confirmed that the earning would be shared with their artists. Perhaps at least the record labels will treat artists fairly or maybe not.

Daniel Taub and Work in Israel

Middle Eastern nation Israel has a United Kingdom ambassador who has recently been talking about the development of fresh new relationships. He’s talking about relationships that exist for Israel and countries that have had questionable interactions with it for extended periods of time.

The objective behind this is to manage the dangers that are associated with Iran and its nuclear potential. Daniel Taub took the time to chat with a publication that’s called The Independent. He confirmed Israel’s thoughts with regard to the Geneva Accord.  Learn more about Daniel Taub: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/iran-will-still-make-a-nuclear-bomb-israel-s-ambassador-to-the-uk-daniel-taub-argues-the-geneva-deal-8965373.html and http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/personal-view/8833883/Gilad-Shalits-return-is-a-testament-to-Israels-love-of-life.html

He said that the Geneva Accord is not going to accomplish much regarding defending people against Iran’s dangers. He said that it’s not going to be able to stop Iran from being able to swiftly get its hands on a nuclear weapon.

A national security crew for Israel got to Washington, D.C. in order to participate in discussions with officials who come from the United States. These circumstances may establish the need for relationships that in the past may have been 100 percent impossible to fathom.

Taub brought up teamwork between the land of Israel and several mostly Sunni nations. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states are a couple of big examples. These nations are like Israel in that they have major concerns about Iran’s possible nuclear attempts in the future.

Taub indicates that Israel’s Western interactions are still in fine working order. William Hague is a Foreign Secretary for the House of Commons. He expressed that Iran has dedicated itself to a range of major responsibilities.

Daniel Taub’s time on this planet was kicked off back in 1962 in the United Kingdom. He was the recipient of a glowing education.

He went to the Kennedy School of Government located at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States. He enjoyed a rock-solid education in the United Kingdom as well. He attended classes at the University College in London and the University College in Oxford.

This individual went to Israel to live in 1989. He worked for the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) for a while. He was a reserve officer and a combat medic. Taub was part of the group’s global law sector. He attained employment with the Israeli Foreign Ministry at the start of the nineties.

Taub has had multiple diplomatic and legal titles. He functioned as the United Kingdom’s Israel ambassador between the years of 2011 and 2015. He now is part of the foundation for Yav Hanadiv.

Long Albums in the Music Industry are Now Trending

Posted on by

Unless you’re living under a rock, then you’ve noticed that there’s a new trend in the music industry. Albums are becoming insanely long. The number of tracks, and consequently the album lengths, are something that music lovers have long dreamed of. From Migos’ “Culture II” containing 24 tracks lasting one hour and 46 minutes to Chris Brown’s “Heartbreak on a Full Moon” containing an astounding 45 tracks lasting two hours and 38 minutes, fans are getting more for their money. Or are they?

It’s becoming evident that artists are utilizing a greater number of songs on albums as a way to boost numbers that lead to album certifications and placements on the music charts. Billboard and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) both use particular criteria to determine qualification. This process has become more complicated now that streaming has become popular. This is where the strategy behind these super-long albums comes into play. To count as an album sale by Billboard and the RIAA, there must be one album purchased, 10 songs downloaded or 1,500 songs streamed. Since users streaming songs even count when the platform is ad-supported and not requiring the user to pay for the service, essentially everyone can take part in an artist’s album sale figures. Artists are maximizing their resources and they can see dividends as it’s well-known that an artist’s worth is often determined by how many times they’ve had a number-one hit and the number of gold and platinum certifications received. So sorry fans if you thought your favorite artist was trying to give you more bang for your buck. Even though they’ll get the highly-coveted figures, you’ll still get a load of music. So I’d call this a win-win.

Janelle Monáe Releases New Album with Two Sensational Music Videos

Posted on by

Janelle Monáe’s new album is set to be released on April 27, 2018. The album titled “Dirty Computer” will also be unveiled with two new music videos to go along with the long-awaited new recordings. The music video for the single “Make Me Feel” was directed by Alan Ferguson, and “Django Jane” was co-directed by Andrew Donoho, Chuck Lighting, and Lacey Duke.

“Make Me Feel” showcases another electrifying and lively performance with a vibe that can only be described as Prince-inspired. The song is a powerful blend of a rumbling bass and euphoric sound that brings a colorful disco dancing sensation. “Django Jane” has a more hip-hop sound that includes a piano loop with a deceptive percussion that unleashes a gush of bars that flows with pure energy. Both music videos are sensational.

The six-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter was born in Kansas City, Kansas where her mother was a janitor and her father was a truck driver. Her big break came when she moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2001. She collaborated with Outkast’s Big Boi before founding the Wondaland Arts Society.

Monáe has partnered with several artists on her Wondaland Records label such as Erykah Badu with the single “Queen”. The single premiered on SoundCloud with more than 31,000 digital downloads, and the music video received more than four million views on YouTube within its first week.

In support of the #MeToo movement, Monáe spoke at the 2018 Grammy’s prior to announcing Kesha’s emotional performance. Monáe is an advocate for change in the music industry and widely supported among her loyal fans. This is a time when artists such as Monáe are embracing the power of their representation within the music industry.

Monáe is currently in preparation to develop a narrated film to go alongside the release of Dirty Computer; however, a release date has not been announced. The new album is already available for pre-order.

2018 Is the Year of the Reunions

Posted on by

February isn’t even over, and already a number of musical groups have announced reunion tours, albums, and songs or been rumored to do so. Could this be the trend for 2018?

First, 90s pop group the Spice Girls posed for a picture together on Instagram, sparking rumors that this meant a reunion tour or even new music from the divas. Members of the group, especially Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham have since squashed the rumors, but fans are still hopeful.

Next, Soft Call, the duo known for their single “Tainted Love,” has announced a new show after fifteen years of silence (the group was previously broken up between 1984 and 2001). This show will be the last ever opportunity for fans of the 80’s synthpop band to see them play live because it’s a farewell concert. Music lovers should purchase tickets for the September 40th show at London’s O2 Arena before they sell out.

Most recently, three out of four members of the Smashing Pumpkins will reunite for a summer American tour for the first time in eighteen years and in celebration of the band’s thirtieth anniversary. The members who will return to play together are Billy Corgan, guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Noticeably missing is original bassist D’Arcy Wretzky who claims that she was excluded from the reunion. Corgan and the other band members deny that this is the case, however.

They’ll kick off the tour in Glendale, Arizona and wrap it up on September 7th in Boise, Idaho, playing 37 stops along the way. Corgan explained that the band will only play music from their first five albums. This includes songs such as “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “Tonight, Tonight” but nothing released after 2000.

For fans of these bands, the reunions might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Securus Technologies One of the Most Reputed Correctional Firms in the Industry

Posted on by

There has been an increase in the number of drones entering the prisons and making illegal drop-offs. Constant surveillance has not given the result that the prison officials might expect. These unlawful drop-offs mean that the inmates are getting their hands on cigarettes, drugs and even porn – all of which are banned inside the prison. Since the operators of the drones are at far off places, there is no way to know who is operating them and stopping these attempts. Even if the correctional officers can shoot some drones, the criminals have the next one ready for flying since they come at quite a low price and are readily available.

Securus Technologies, the most popular technology, and phone service company in the prison industry, have been working on the way to stop the use of these drones inside the prison. The company has created a new system using which the prison officials can easily detect any drone flying over their premises and also help stop the signal from its operator resulting in it crashing. The system is already in place at various prisons on a trial basis, and its results are being recorded. So far, they have 100% success rate and the demand for the new system is expected to grow as more prisons are looking for ways to deal with the problems of illegal drones making drop-offs inside the prison. If the problem of drones’ usage by criminals and inmates to supply and receive the contraband packages is not solved, the lives of many inmates and the corrections officers can be in danger. It is not possible for the corrections officers to be present everywhere in the vast prison facilities that are spread through acres of land.

It is this advantage that the criminals use to send drones in the area where there are no corrections officers present, which is from where the inmates later collect their package. However, when the drone detection technology developed by Securus Technologies is installed, it would become much easier to detect from where the drone is coming and what is its exact location. Once the position of the drone trying to supply contraband is identified, it can be shot down or neutralized in any other way deemed necessary. Securus Technologies has recently also introduced the wireless containment system, which is a technology that would not let the contraband phones function inside the prison. Thus, whenever the inmate tries to make a call using the contraband phone, the calls would not go through.

The stoppage of using the contraband phone to ensuring that no drone with contraband package passes through would contribute a lot in reducing the crime rate, inside as well as outside of the correctional facilities.

Killmonger’s Fate Never Given a Second Thought In Black Panther Film

Posted on by

People who have seen Black Panther know Killmonger’s fate in the film. However, there is one thing that may come as a surprise to people. It is that the creative team behind the film have never considered giving Killmonger a different fate. One of the most interesting things about the MCU is that it is not known for having strong memorable villains. The only villains that are memorable are Loki, The Winter Soldier, and Killmonger. Two of them have lived on to become new protagonists. Killmonger has suffered a different fate leaving the audience with a haunting line.

One of the best things about Killmonger is that he is not the typical villain. Instead, he is simply against the ways of Wakanda which has conducted itself as a separatist culture. Killmonger was not only angry that his father was killed and he was abandoned by his own, but that he identifies with the people who have suffered simply because of Wakanda’s way of abandonment. Therefore, when he had the chance, his goal was to bring forth all of the technology from Wakanda as a means of overthrowing all of the oppressors. In the end, his intentions were noble to the point that T’Challa has decided in the end to honor Killmonger.

One thing about Killmonger’s death is that it was always planned from the first draft. One thing that was communicated with his death is that T’Challa and Killmonger could not coexist. For one thing, it was not just the philosophical differences they were having to deal with, it was the methodical differences as well. Another thing to consider is that Killmonger was too far gone to change.

Killmonger Represents The Audience

Posted on by

One interesting thing about Black Panther is the villain of the film. While Black Panther shows Wakanda and the culture as something that we as a people strive to be, Killmonger is also representation of us as we are now. He is both the best and the worst of us. When it was stated that Killmonger has real world sensibilities, it meant that Killmonger is actually the voice of those that have been oppressed trying to be noticed by those who have not experienced oppression and poverty. This actually brings a “Tale of Two Cities” element to the Black Panther film.

One interesting thing is that Killmonger not only represents the audience members, particularly those that have come from a history with oppression, he is also one who represents the person who has the knowledge and the skills needed to gain some of the riches from a thriving group with the intentions of spreading it out to others who have been oppressed. It also shows the perception of those who have waited it out and have had enough.

One thing that can be said about oppression is that the oppressors are not necessarily going to have a change of heart. At some point, the oppressed realize that they are going to have to go out and take the type of freedom that they want for themselves. This is one thing that Killmonger has attempted to do. While people have fought for Wakanda, Killmonger has fought for the people in the rest of the world. One thing that can be said about Killmonger is that he is truly a tragic and heartbreaking character in the film’s narrative.
