Sade Makes Comeback on Soundtrack for Upcoming Film Co-Starring Oprah Winfrey

It’s been eight years since Sade seemingly disappeared from the limelight, and fans have been waiting for a comeback ever since. The singer-songwriter was asked to contribute to the soundtrack for the upcoming movie “A Wrinkle in Time” which includes co-stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling.

Sade’s last recorded album was “Soldier of Love” and was released worldwide in 2010. It was her sixth studio album and the first album that included new music in ten years. The album debuted at number 11 which made it the highest debut on the Urban Hot AC Chart in the same decade.

Sade was born in Ibadan, Nigeria and began as a background singer for the group named Pride. In 1983, she formed her own band and released the debut album “Your Love is King” in February 1984 which later rose to become a top 10 hit.

The chosen title for Sade’s new single is “Flower of the Universe” and will be part of a soundtrack that includes music by artists like DJ Khaled, Demi Lavato, Sia, and Beyonce’. The composition was completed by Ramin Djawadi who is best known for being the composer of the score for the hit HBO television series Game of Thrones.

A Wrinkle in Time was directed by Ava DuVernay, making her the first woman of color to ever be selected to direct an action film which had a production budget that exceeded $100 million. When she spoke on Twitter about the choice to have Sade on the soundtrack, DuVernay wrote: “I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway. She was kind [and] giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget. Proud to announce that Sade has created an original song…And it’s a dream come true.”

The Disney film will be released in theaters nationwide on March 9, 2018.

Sade is Back, With New Track for “A Wrinkle in Time”

While movie critics aren’t sure what to make of new release “A Wrinkle in Time,” music critics are gently pleased with Sade’s song for that movie, “Flower of the Universe.” It’s the band’s first new release in eight years, since “Soldier of Love,” the 2010 album.
The song is “all it needs to be: a new Sade song,” Spin opined.
Rolling Stone cites a “scratchy beat, elegant, melancholy guitar and singer Sade Adu’s polished, imposing vocals.”
The film director, Ava DuVernay, announced on Twitter that Sade would contribute a song. “I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway. She was kind and giving. A Goddess.”
Sade is both the name of the group and its singer, Sade Adu. The band made its name in the 1980s, selling more than 50 million albums since.
Adu, born in Ibadan, Nigeria in 1957, has been mostly out of the recording picture for nearly 20 years while raising a child. “Diamond Life,” a 1984 release, became widely popular in both soul and pop circles, along with the single “Smooth Operator.”
“Soldier of Love,” the 2010 release album, “sucked the grooves out of their sound in favor of a stillness that conveyed both the vulnerability and strength inherent in isolation,” Spin said.
The movie, a live-action adaptation by Walt Disney Pictures, stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Chris Pine, is based on the 1962 science fiction novel by Madeleine L’Engle.
Other music in the soundtrack is by DJ Khaled and Demi Lovato, among others.
“Flower of the Universe” is a quiet song about a mother’s love, and is backed by acoustic guitar. A B-side adaptation by No I.D. includes a drum track.
