The newly installed U.S. Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos is a community and business leader I have always admired for the work she has completed in her home state of Michigan and across the U.S. I first became aware of Betsy DeVos when she brought her fight to bring education reform to as many children as possible to the state of Florida and found success crossing party lines to gain bipartisan support for her school choice and school voucher programs; in my opinion, the ability to unite as many politicians as possible to her ideals has made Betsy DeVos one of the most impressive political experts in the nation. Despite claims to the contrary, I believe Betsy DeVos is not a political novice with no experience of moving in circles of power; in fact, in my opinion the fact Mrs. DeVos has served as a member of the Republican National Committee and been elected as the chair of the Michigan Republican Party on four separate occasions. Her political achievements include serving as a volunteer on the campaign for President of Gerald Ford and serving as President George W. Bush’s pick as a board member of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Check her website for more info at betsydevos.com.
I believe the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation is one of the most impressive in the U.S. as it provides a number of charitable organizations with crucial funding that are not always focused on the traditional areas of philanthropy. Since establishing the foundation in 1989, I have been impressed with the way Mrs. DeVos has worked to secure funding for many good causes across the U.S., but I believe the ArtPrize program in her native Michigan is one of the most important and innovative arts based charitable awards currently in operation. One of the aspects of the ArtPrize that I feel is important is the fact members of the public are given the chance to vote on publicly displayed artistic works over the course of this annual event.
The work of Betsy DeVos in bringing education reform to many in the U.S. has obviously been impressive and I believe the fact school choice and voucher programs can be found in 17 states stands as testimony to the good work completed by the Holland, Michigan born community leader. There are many aspects of the work of Betsy DeVos that I feel are important, including her role as one of the main thinkers behind the development of the Detroit Charter Schools program In my own humble opinion, the creation of the West Michigan Aviation Academy that allows students the chance to learn about the aviation industry shows how successful the policies developed by Mrs. DeVos have been in her home state and across the nation.
