The upcoming DC Extended Universe film Shazam seems to moving along, with two new cast members being announced by Deadline.
According to the report, Ian Chen from Fresh Off the Boat has been cast in the role of Eugene Choi, while Jovan Armand of Bella and the Bulldogs will be playing Pedro Peña. This comes after we have already received word that Angel Asher (of Andi Mack) will play the protagonist, Billy Batson, with Zachary Levi (Marvel’s Thor movies and Tangled) as his superhero form and Jack Dylan Grazer (It) as Freddy Freeman.
The film centers around Billy, a teenage boy given the power to transform into an adult superhero whenever he yells the magic word “Shazam!” Freddy is a friend of his who also gains superpowers and becomes his sidekick. The two are traditionally joined by a third member, Mary Batson/Bromfield, who is Billy’s twin sister and often Freddy’s love interest.
While these three have a long history in comics—debuting in the 1940s and often outselling Superman—Eugene and Pedro are newer characters, premiering in 2011’s Flashpoint event. In that series, these five children, plus another girl named Darla, all shared the power of Shazam, and fused into one superhero by shouting “Shazam!” together.
In the New 52, the six kids were reimagined as a group of foster siblings. In that version Billy could share his power with the other five, allowing each to become a superhero and team up. It is unclear if this will occur in the film, or if they will simply be friends or family of Billy’s meant to round out the cast.
Grace Fulton has been cast in an unknown role, possibly as Mary.
