Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”: 10 Years Later

Posted on by

Katy Perry has had massive success throughout the course of her career. Songs like “Firework”, “Teenage Dream”, and “Last Friday Night” dominated charts upon release, and made her a household name. Even today, she continues to be a pop icon, and is currently in her bizzare “Witness” era. In a recent interview with Glamour, Katy reflected on the earliest parts of her career. In particular, her debut single “I Kissed A Girl” was the center of attention. Originally releasing in 2008, the track was met with large amounts of controversy for its references to same-sex experimentation. Featuring lyrics like “It’s not what I’m used to, just wanna try you on” and “You’re my experimental game” with an earworm chorus, the track made it’s way up to #1 on the Billboard charts. While expressing sexuality has become more acceptable and encouraged today, the song itself could be considered problematic due to its shallow nature.
“We’ve come a long way. Bisexuality wasn’t as talked about back then, or any type of fluidity. If I had to write that song again, I probably would make an edit on it. Lyrically, it has a couple of stereotypes in it. Your mind changes so much in 10 years, and you grow so much. What’s true for you can evolve.” Katy told Glamour. Political correctness is a major part of present-day culture, so adjustments to the song if it were to be released today would be necessary. Acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community continues to grow, so this song was a step in the right direction. However, it’s important to be mindful that what may be acceptable today may be entirely disrespectful in the future.

Peter Rabit Movie Makes Light of Food Allergies

Posted on by

Sony’s Peter Rabbit movie opened this weekend to record-breaking audiences. The film is loosely based on the Beatrix Potter’s children’s book. However, soon after the movie came out on February 9th, social media lit up with angry moviegoers blasting the new flick.

During one scene, the rabbits attack a man who is allergic to blackberries, Peter Rabbit’s arch nemesis, Mr. McGregor. As they pelt the fruit at him, aiming for his mouth, Tom goes into anaphylaxis. He must pull out an Epi-pen to save his life. Moviegoers felt that Sony made light of the situation. It was uncalled for in a children’s movie to show these furry critters being vicious to harm someone using a medical ailment.

The scene did not sit well with Allergy UK, a support group that helps bring awareness to such conditions. Not only does the movie show vindictive behavior that can be mimicked by other children, but it also implies that such conditions are not severe.

The groups issued a demand for Sony to apologize for the insensitive scene in the show. Honestly, children will watch this movie and not think nothing of it. However, does it imply that it’s okay to give something to someone that they are allergic too if you are mad at them? Did they go too far and suggest that the situation wasn’t that serious, and an Epi-pen would solve all such problems? People die from this condition every day. Many feel it was just in poor taste to put this scene in the movie.

Twitter and Facebook have been buzzing to boycott the film. Most feel that it shows that bullying is okay, and you can use whatever means possible to get revenge. Sony issued a public statement of apology, and they wanted viewers to know that they meant nothing by the scene, and it was, in fact, insensitive. However, it may be too late to encourage people to go see a movie when it appears to be making lite of a serious issue.

NHL Zamboni Drivers at the 2018 Winter Olympics

Posted on by

NHL players may not have come to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Korea, but that doesn’t mean that the NHL is completely without a presence at the games. Seven Zamboni drivers, who are responsible for maintaining the smoothness and consistency of the ice surface, will be working the Olympics this year.

This wasn’t an expected outcome: Korean officials initially believed that their in-house staff would be able to service the ice during the games. However, it became clear as the Olympics were set to begin, they realized that they were in over their heads and needed to turn to the ultimate pros.

Part of the problem is that ice skating isn’t a hugely popular sport in Korea, meaning that their experience in maintaining ice surfaces hasn’t been tested on a large stage in the past. Now, with the world’s eyes on Pyeongchang for the 2018 Olympics, officials began to worry that their preparations weren’t sufficient to make sure that athletes were competing on world-class ice surfaces.

Enter the NHL, and their cadre of Zamboni drivers. The Zamboni is a beloved staple of any hockey game, the large machine smoothing and regulating the ice surface before the game and during period breaks. And the people who drive the Zambonis are masters of their craft.

While it may seem simple, the art of Zamboni driving is anything but, with drivers leaning on decades of experience to control many factors in creating the perfect ice service. As the largest and richest ice-based sport in the world, the NHL naturally has the cream of the crop when it comes to Zamboni drivers.

Now, seven of these drivers have made their way to Korea to assist in making sure the Olympics ice is up to the highest of standards. The NHL athletes may not be competing for gold, but the NHL is still participating in some small form in the games nevertheless.

After Controversial “Last Jedi,” Disney Re-shoots Solo: A Star Wars Story

Posted on by

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Disney’s third foray into George Lucas’s critically acclaimed Star Wars universe, received widespread praise among critics, but fell far short with audiences.

Review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes reports the film received a 90% approval rating from professional reviewers, but less than a 50% approval rating from average audience members. Nevertheless, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has since become one of the highest grossing films in cinema history, lagging behind only it’s predecessor Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Despite The Last Jedi’s commercial success, the next film in the franchise has apparently struggled to make it through the production process. Industry analysts were stunned when Lucasfilm chose to fire Solo: A Star Wars Story’s directorial team last year.

Firing a director in the middle of a project is not entirely unheard of, but many feel the decision to do so may signal serious trouble.

Since then, Disney has hired famed writer/director Ron Howard to rehabilitate the new film, which follows the adventures of a young Han Solo. The new director, who was hired in June, has already re-shot significant portions of the movie (potentially as much as 80% of it, according to some sources) and industry insiders are worried such significant edits and do-overs so close to the film’s May 2018 release date could produce a product that is rushed and hard to follow.

Disney seems to disagree, and has allegedly been extremely satisfied with Mr. Howard’s performance thus far.

Ultimately, Disney knows it has room to breath when it comes to the Star Wars franchise as each film has proven both extremely popular and largely immune to the sort of audience apathy that has built up around some of it’s other properties, like the much maligned Pirates of the Caribbean.

Only time will tell if Disney is able to continue the franchise’s thus far unparalleled success, and Star Wars fans should keep be keeping their eyes open; sources close to the production report a trailer should be released soon.

New Super Mario Movie In Production from Illumination

Posted on by

In recent news, Nintendo has revealed that it is teaming with Illumination in order to create a new Super Mario movie. This will be the first U.S. Theatrical film released after the 1993 live action film starring the late Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Of course this film is going to have a stronger resemblance to the games given that it is going to be animated. The other film that was released in 1993 bore very little resemblance to the games. As a matter of fact, the environment of the mushroom kingdom looked more like something out of Batman or Blade Runner than any Mario game.

Even though many people remember the 1993 film as the first attempt at an adaptation, that was not the first one. An earlier animated film was released in Japan which had a lot of resemblance to the games. The characters resembled their video game counterparts. When people compare that to Bowser being pretty much human in the 1993 film, this shows that the producers cared about the source material at the time.

As of right now, there is no telling what the film is going to look like when it comes out. The only thing that can be said is that it is probably going to look identical to the recent games given that video game technology has caught up to the other forms of technology. All that would be needed would be for someone to play a game and then have them voiced by big name actors. However, it is very likely that Nintendo and Illumination are going to work on a story that is going to work well for the audience.

Justin Timberlake’s New Album Title Leaves Fans Pondering about Subtext

Posted on by

Justin Timberlake’s upcoming album “Man of the Woods” was announced last week with a lot of fanfare and questions. He first unveiled the album on his twitter account with a handwritten note that showed sixteen tracks that would be included in the new album. Alongside two of those tracks were the initials of two collaborators that Justin also left the fans to ponder.

Based on the title of the album, fans might have thought that Justin’s songs would be about trees or the actual woods. However, based on the released single “Filthy”, it seems that he’s staying true to his signature trademark of bringing the same electrifying R&B sensation.

Justin’s 27-city Man of the Woods Tour will begin in March 2018 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. But, fans can find out what some of the other songs such as “Flannel” and “Supplies” sound like before then. The album officially debuts on February 2, 2018. The tour is scheduled to end on May 30, 2018 in Memphis, Tennessee; Justin’s hometown.

Before then, Justin is gearing up for headlining the Super Bowl LII half-time show. The game will be held on February 4, 2018 at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Justin was a guest singer with Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime performance in 2004. His performance has been widely anticipated throughout the entertainment and music industry, for years.

Justin’s persona is likable and his performances leave an audience with excitement and positive energy. He’s been tight-lipped about the 12-minute show and has not given any indications if there will be any collaborations. In a humorous gesture on Instagram by actor and singer Will Smith, he provided Justin some advice about his upcoming performance as well as sharing a “Throwback Thursday” photo of both of them.

Todd McFarlane Meeting With Actors For Upcoming Spawn Reboot

Posted on by

The Spawn reboot is finally underway. After attempts from studios to get another film made on the character, Todd McFarlane has finally gotten something going that he is going to write and direct himself. The direction he is going to take is to make it a low budget horror film. This can serve as an intro story to the character. As of right now, Todd is meeting with different actors in order to sign them to key roles. Among the actors that have been met is Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio. As some have stated, seeing Leonardo DiCaprio in a low budget horror film is going to be a really interesting thing.

There is no telling what these key roles are going to be in the film. It wouldn’t be surprising if Jamie Foxx was to take on the titular role with Leonardo DiCaprio playing as Jason Wynn. However, there might be other characters that they have in mind. Given that Spawn is going to be a background character in his own film, he could be just someone in a suit. In this film, it is very likely that Spawn is actually going to be the antagonist with later installments painting him as more of a protagonist.

Spawn is one of a group of comic book characters that are looking to be rebooted on the big screen. Another character that had attempts at a reboot was The Crow. Even though the first Crow film was a success, subsequent films have turned out to be disappointing and they could not live up to the original. The Crow: City of Angels suffered from many things, among which was reshoots and a lot of scenes being chopped out.

Poster, Teaser Trailer for “Teen Titans Go!” Movie

Posted on by

Warner Bros. has released a poster and a teaser for their upcoming film Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, with some more material apparently coming tomorrow (Wednesday, January 10, 2018).

In the teaser trailer, Robin addresses the audience, saying that he will have an important announcement tomorrow, but which he cannot share until then. “You can’t tease something and then announce something on the same day!” he declares. “It’s an internet marketing rule!”

Meanwhile, the poster depicts director’s chairs for each members of the Teen Titan team—Robin, Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire and Cyborg. However, Cyborg’s head has detached and is running around on wire legs, being chased by Beast Boy in green cat form; Robin is standing on his seat to yell at them while Starfire watches and Raven ignores them, reading what appears to be a script. It includes the tagline “The super hero movie to end all super hero movies. Hopefully.”

Some fans may agree. The film is based on the cartoon Teen Titans Go!, which has proven quite divisive among audiences. On one hand, it is Cartoon Network’s most popular show, but the fact that it is some sort of… reboot? retool? parody? of the popular Teen Titans cartoon that ran from 2003 until 2006 has riled many fans. The show also uses a brand of childish and sometimes mean-spirited humor that many find grating.

Teen Titans Go! often dents the fourth wall, and the movie is planning to do the same: the plot involves the team trying to get a movie made about themselves like all the other superheroes, only for the director to turn out to be a supervillain with their own agenda.

The film is due out in theaters on July 27, 2018.

Miley Cyrus and Elton John Gush Over Their ‘Tiny Dancer’ Duet

This year’s Grammy Awards celebration had its share of memorable moments, but Miley Cyrus and Elton John may have given fans a truly unforgettable moment. As he has often done in past years, Elton John performed with a younger artist, this time choosing Ms. Cyrus to help him sing one of his greatest hits, “Tiny Dancer” live at the Grammys.
Elton John was Honored at the 2018 Grammys
Although the celebrated artist probably would have taken the stage to perform anyway, he was on hand to receive the Recording Academy president’s merit award. Elton, along with Bernie Taupin, his writing partner, were honored with the award in recognition of Elton’s long musical career.
Later, Miley Cyrus joined Elton John on stage to sing “Tiny Dancer” for an appreciative crowd. While the performance was a big hit with audiences, it was Miley herself who seemed the most pleased with the experience. In a tweet, Cyrus thanked Mr. John for the opportunity and said that the years she had known the veteran artist have deeply impacted her life.
Miley added that Elton John has always been an inspiration to her and that it’s his spirit that keeps her striving to achieve her own dreams.
Elton John Gushed Over his Duet with Miley Cyrus
Upon seeing the tweet from Ms. Cyrus, Elton John responded in kind. He shared a photo of Miley and himself posing together, commenting that he felt equally honored to share the stage with someone of Cyrus’ musical talent. He said she was “terrific” in both her demeanor and her performance.
Commenting more specifically on the duet performance of “Tiny Dancer,” Elton added that Miley was “gorgeous” in her red gown. He closed his comments by expressing his love and adoration for Miley Cyrus.
